# vDesign vs Canva

> Canva is the template-led design suite, now reachable from ChatGPT and Claude through its AI connector. vDesign is free, works on any model, and every design is a file you own.

## In short

Canva makes design easy for people, with a very large template library and a forgiving editor. Its AI
connector, built on the Canva MCP server, now lets ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants create
and edit Canva designs from a chat.

vDesign makes design easy for assistants. An agent on the model you choose writes a real,
editable design onto a canvas, and you keep editing it by hand. The design is a `.vd` file:
small, readable text that is yours, and that any model can read and change.

## Where each one wins

**Choose Canva** for template-led work at scale: a library of templates, photos and elements
to start from, print ordering, brand kits shared across a large team, and a product your whole
company already knows.

**Choose vDesign** when the assistant is how you work: you want any model, including a local
one, to build the design; you want to keep the result as a file rather than an account; and you
want it free.

## Side by side

| | vDesign | Canva |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Starts from | A sentence, or your own brand | A sentence or a template from a very large library |
| Which AI | Any model: your assistant over MCP, or vDesign AI on your own key, local models included | Canva's own AI, and assistants through its connector |
| Where the design lives | A `.vd` file you keep, on your computer or wherever you put it | Your Canva account |
| Can a model read the design | Yes, it is plain text written for models | Through Canva's connector and API |
| Edit by hand | Yes, on a canvas: drag, resize, retype, recolour | Yes, in Canva's editor |
| Cost for individuals | Free, with no credits | Free and paid plans |
| Your brand | A brand made from your site, guidelines or tokens; designs are checked against its rules, and switched to another brand in one step | Brand kits |
| Templates and stock | None built in | Very large catalogue |
| Video | Pages become video with motion and music | Yes |

## The same brief in both

Ask for "an A3 poster for a neighbourhood tree-planting drive, Sunday 5 October, 7 AM, Central
Park, room for a QR code".

In Canva, the connector creates the design in your Canva account, and you carry on in Canva's editor. In vDesign, the assistant writes the
poster element by element onto the canvas, then you ask it to "add the QR code to the poster"
and it patches one region rather than starting again. You can watch exactly that on the
[home page](https://getv.design/#see-it-work).

## Using both

They work side by side. A team can keep Canva for campaigns built on its template library and
use vDesign where an assistant does the first draft and the result needs to stay a file:
a pitch deck kept in a repository, a poster a model will revise next month, a design a
developer embeds in a product.

## Questions

### Is vDesign a Canva replacement?

Not for everything. Canva's template catalogue, stock library, print service and team features are far larger. vDesign is for people who want an assistant on the model of their choice to build an editable design they keep as a file, without a subscription.

### Canva works in ChatGPT and Claude too. What is the difference?

Canva's AI connector creates designs that live in your Canva account and are edited in Canva. vDesign's connector creates a .vd file you own, which any model can read and change, in an editor that is free for individuals.

### Can I use a model that is not Claude or ChatGPT?

Yes. Inside vDesign, vDesign AI runs on your own key with Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, xAI, Mistral, DeepSeek, OpenRouter and others, or on a local or custom model in the desktop app.

### Can I move designs from Canva to vDesign?

Not automatically. vDesign does not import Canva designs. Ask the assistant to rebuild a design from a description or an exported image, then edit it by hand.
