In short
Canva makes design easy for people, with a very large template library and a forgiving editor. Its AI connector, built on the Canva MCP server, now lets ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants create and edit Canva designs from a chat.
vDesign makes design easy for assistants. An agent on the model you choose writes a real,
editable design onto a canvas, and you keep editing it by hand. The design is a .vd file:
small, readable text that is yours, and that any model can read and change.
Where each one wins
Choose Canva for template-led work at scale: a library of templates, photos and elements to start from, print ordering, brand kits shared across a large team, and a product your whole company already knows.
Choose vDesign when the assistant is how you work: you want any model, including a local one, to build the design; you want to keep the result as a file rather than an account; and you want it free.

The same brief in both
Ask for “an A3 poster for a neighbourhood tree-planting drive, Sunday 5 October, 7 AM, Central Park, room for a QR code”.
In Canva, the connector creates the design in your Canva account, and you carry on in Canva’s editor. In vDesign, the assistant writes the poster element by element onto the canvas, then you ask it to “add the QR code to the poster” and it patches one region rather than starting again. You can watch exactly that on the home page.
Using both
They work side by side. A team can keep Canva for campaigns built on its template library and use vDesign where an assistant does the first draft and the result needs to stay a file: a pitch deck kept in a repository, a poster a model will revise next month, a design a developer embeds in a product.
