Licence

The format and these docs

The .vd format specification and this documentation are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0). That covers these pages, the DSL reference and the examples, and the vDesign skill they are published from.

You may share and adapt this material for any purpose, including commercially, as long as you:

  • give appropriate credit, to Sagar Saini;
  • link to the licence; and
  • say if you made changes.

The full terms are the licence’s legal code.

Implementing the format

The .vd format may be implemented by anyone, free of charge. You need no permission to read or write .vd files, in your own software, open or closed. The licence above covers the text of the specification; it places no condition on the format itself.

The vDesign apps and code

The vDesign apps are free to use. Their code, including the renderer and the editor, is proprietary: it is not open source, and the licence above does not cover it.

Icons

The icons the vDesign agent tools place come from Lucide, under the ISC licence, with the icons Lucide took from Feather under the MIT licence. A placed icon is ordinary path data in your file, yours to use and change like any other shape.

The embed

The embed package, @getv.design/embed, is free to use under its own licence, the vDesign Embed Licence. It is not covered by CC BY 4.0, and it is not open in the way the format is: the code is proprietary. In short:

  • Use it for anything, including in commercial products, free of charge, with no licence key and no watermark.
  • Pass it on unchanged. You may bundle it into your website or application, or serve it from npm or a public CDN, as long as its copyright and licence notices stay with it. Bundling, minifying, tree-shaking and code-splitting are not changes.
  • Do not change it, or pass on a changed copy, and do not reverse engineer it, except where the law gives you the right to anyway.
  • Credit is appreciated, not required. Beyond the notices in the code, you need show no credit to the people who use your product. A “Made with vDesign” link is welcome.
  • No telemetry. The embed requests only its own files, the documents you give it, and font files from the font location you set (jsDelivr unless you set another).
  • Nothing stops you competing with vDesign, or writing your own software that reads and writes .vd files.

The code and fonts of others that the package contains are listed, with their licences, in its THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt; their own licences govern them.

This summary is not the licence. The full text is the LICENSE file in the package, also at cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/@getv.design/embed@0.2.0/LICENSE.
